🤔 What Are Overnight Oats?
Overnight oats have been all the rage for about 10 years now, and it’s easy to see why! All you do is mix rolled oats with your choice of milk or yoghurt, leave them in the fridge for at least 4 hours or overnight, and by morning you’ve got a creamy, delicious bowl of oats waiting for you. The best part? You can flavour them however you fancy – add fruit, nuts, seeds, or go for Biscoff like in this recipe for a tasty, healthy breakfast that’s super convenient!
🥘 Ingredients You Will Need
Here is a brief overview of the ingredients you will need to make these Biscoff overnight oats. To find out how to make them allergy-friendly, simply scroll down to the section below this one.
✋ Be sure to double check all packaging for allergens. ✋
- Oats – Rolled oats (also known as old-fashioned oats) are best for this recipe. You can use quick/instant oats, but you will need to reduce the liquid to 120ml, and expect a thinner texture. I wouldn’t recommend using steel-cut oats or coarse oatmeal for this one.
- Chia Seeds – These little seeds are packed with antioxidants, fibre, protein, and omega-3s, plus they’re a great source of calcium and magnesium. They also absorb liquid from the milk, giving your oats a nice thick texture. If you prefer to skip them, just use 120ml of milk instead.
- Lotus Biscoff Spread – The star ingredient! This smooth, sweet spread with a hint of spice is what makes these overnight oats so special.
- Milk – Use any dairy or plant-based milk you like. Unsweetened almond or oat milk works particularly well.
- Vanilla Extract (optional) – Adds a lovely sweet depth of flavour to the oats, but you can leave it out if you prefer.
- Protein Powder (optional) – Add a scoop of vanilla protein powder to the mix, if you want an extra protein boost.
See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
🥜 How Can I Make This Allergy-Friendly?
- ✔️ Make It Dairy-Free: Use a dairy-free/plant based milk. If you want to add the optional protein powder, you will need to use a vegan version.
- ✔️ Make It Gluten-Free: Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a shop-bought Biscoff spread, HOWEVER, if you are willing to make your own, there is a great gluten-free biscoff spread recipe here. Be sure to use gluten-free oats too.
- ✔️ Make It Soya-Free: That pesky soya sneaks in everywhere doesn’t it, even in Biscoff spread, so you will need to make your own spread as per the gluten-free section above.

🤔 Can You Eat Overnight Oats Warm?
If you have never had them before, it may seem like a bit of a weird concept, eating raw, cold oats, but trust me, you need to try it!!
I love having them chilled from the fridge, but some people do prefer to warm them a little before serving. There are a couple of ways you can do this.
✔️ In The Microwave: Heat for 45-60 seconds, stirring halfway through.
✔️ In a Saucepan: Pour the oats into a saucepan and heat on a low heat on the hob for a few minutes until warmed through.
💡 Lauren's Tips
- ✔️ Prep in batches: Overnight oats keep well in the fridge for up to 3 days, so you can make a few portions at once for easy breakfasts throughout the week!
- ✔️ Use Rolled Oats For The Best Texture: Rolled oats hold up well overnight and will give the oats a creamy texture. Quick oats can work, but they tend to turn mushy, and steel-cut oats won’t soften enough for this recipe.
- ✔️ The Spread: You may like to warm the Biscoff spread in the microwave for 10 or so seconds before stirring into the oats to soften it a little, making it easier to stir in.
- ✔️ Overnight: Although the oats will be ready after 4 hours, do try to leave them overnight if you can. This will really give them time to soak into the milk and create a more creamy texture.
💬 Recipe FAQs
Overnight oats can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just make sure they’re in an airtight container, and give them a stir before serving.
While freezing is possible, it may change the texture of the oats once thawed. If you want to give it a try, just freeze in an airtight container and thaw in the fridge overnight, but I would advise for best results, eat them fresh.
Yes, you can use either creamy or crunchy Biscoff spread in this recipe, depending on your personal preference.
No, it’s totally optional. If you’re looking to boost the protein content, adding a scoop of protein powder is a great idea, but the recipe works perfectly fine without it.
