The kids had eaten hot dogs in a bun the day before and I didn’t want to give them the same dinner again the next night (although I’m sure they would have loved it!).
I chopped the hot dogs into small rounds and fried them off in a pan alongside some chopped veg, coconut aminos, rice and egg (keep scrolling to the "how can I make this allergy friendly" section for an egg-free option) and the result was big thumbs up all round!

🥘 Ingredients You Will Need
Here is a brief overview of the ingredients you will need to make this hot dog fried rice. To find out how to make it allergy-friendly, simply scroll down to the section below this one.
✋ Be sure to double check all packaging for allergens. ✋
- Hot Dogs: I’m not going to sit here and convince you that hot dogs are the healthiest food in the world, but a little of what you fancy does you good! I absolutely love these Dinos Big Dogs, they have the highest pork content I can find and a lot less “nasties” than lots of the other brands. They are a little more expensive, but I feel it's worth it as we only have them occasionally.
- Leftover Rice: Traditionally fried rice uses leftover cooked rice as its drier and crisps up better than freshly cooked rice. For extra ease, heat up a packet of microwave rice in the microwave before adding it to the pan and this will give you a similar result to the leftover rice. Jasmine, long grain and basmati work really well. I've also used microwave rice in this really easy keema rice, its so handy for quick, midweek meals!
- Veg: I have added carrots and frozen peas, as most people normally have these at home, but feel free to add whatever veg you have in the fridge or freezer. Spring onions (green onions) are chopped and sprinkled over the rice as a garnish.
- Aromatics: Onion & garlic.
- Coconut aminos / soy sauce: Used to add an authentic Chinese umami flavour to the fried rice. Use coconut aminos if you are gluten-free.
- Egg: The egg is scrambled, then sliced and shredded & tossed through the fried rice mixture. See below for an egg-free option.
- Oil: Sesame oil gives an authentic flavour to the fried rice.
See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
🤔 How Can I Make This Recipe Allergy Friendly?
- Make It Egg-Free: - Either leave out the egg or another great option is to use silken tofu as I have in this fried rice recipe. It has a very similar texture to scrambled egg.
- Make It Soy-Free: Use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce. The biona coconut aminos is both gluten and soya free.
- Make It Gluten Free: Use tamari instead of soya sauce which has a very similar flavour. Check the ingredients in the hot dogs.
- Make It Sesame Free: Use olive oil or vegetable oil instead.
- Make This Recipe Vegan: Use vegan hot dog sausages and tofu instead of egg.
✏️ How To Make Hot Dog Fried Rice
⬇️ Here you will find an overview of how to make the recipe. For full information on ingredients and quantities please see the recipe card at the bottom of the page ⬇️
Step 1: To start preparing the fried rice, you will need to dice the hot dogs into rounds and finely dice the onion, garlic, and carrot.
Step 2: Once your ingredients are ready, heat the sesame oil in a large pan over medium heat.
Add the thinly sliced hot dogs, onion, garlic, carrots, and frozen peas, and cook for 5-7 minutes until softened.
Step 3: After the hot dogs and vegetables have softened, push them over to one side of the pan and break the eggs into the other side.
Whisk the eggs with a fork until they are combined, and cook until the eggs are set.
Then, use a spatula to slice the eggs into thin strips or chunks before mixing them with the hot dogs and vegetables.
Step 4: Next, add the cooked rice to the pan and stir well to combine with the hot dogs and vegetables.
Drizzle the coconut aminos or soy sauce over the rice and stir well to coat. The sauce will add a rich and savoury flavour to the dish, enhancing the taste of the hot dogs and vegetables.
Step 5: Finally, season with salt and pepper to taste, and cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, until the rice is heated through and slightly crispy.
The crispy texture of the rice is the perfect contrast to the soft and tender hot dogs and vegetables.
Serve hot and enjoy your delicious hot dog fried rice!
This dish is a great way to use leftover rice and will surely become a family favourite.
💡 Tips & Tricks
- ✔️Prep Ingredients Ahead of Time: Chop all your vegetables and hot dogs before you start cooking. This way everything is ready to go once you start cooking.
- ✔️I have whisked the egg with a fork directly in the frying pan to keep this a one-pan meal, however, if you prefer, you can whisk the egg up in a separate bowl and pour it into the pan once combined.
- ✔️Double-check the ingredients in the hot dogs if you are following a dairy-free diet, as a lot of them tend to contain milk. (The Dinos big dogs don't - but always double check packaging)
- ✔️ Use Day-Old Rice: Day-old rice works best for fried rice as it has dried out slightly, preventing it from becoming too mushy when stir-fried. If using freshly cooked rice, spread it out on a baking tray and let it cool in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before using. You can also use microwave rice, which will give a similar effect.
- Garnish: Garnish the fried rice with sliced green onions or coriander (cilantro) for a fresh and flavourful finish.
🤔 Can I Use Frozen Vegetables Instead Of Fresh Vegetables?
Yes, you can use frozen vegetables instead of fresh vegetables. Peas can be added straight to the pan frozen, however, bigger vegetables like frozen carrots will need to be thawed first.
🤔 Can I Re-Heat Hot Dog Fried Rice?
As this dish uses leftover cooked rice that has already been heated, it is not advisable to reheat it again. I would recommend eating this dish immediately after serving.
💬 Recipe FAQs
You don’t need to boil the hot dogs before frying them, as they will cook in the pan whilst being fried.
Yes, you can use other types of sausages such as chicken, beef, or vegetarian sausages. You can also experiment with different flavours of sausages to find your favourite combination.
Make sure to use a non-stick pan or a well-seasoned cast iron pan. Also, use high heat and cook the rice quickly, stirring frequently to prevent sticking.
