🤔 What is Meal Planning and Why Should You Do It?
Meal planning doesn’t have to be complicated – it’s basically just about figuring out what you’re going to cook ahead of time.
Planning your meals, you can save you time, money, and avoid any last-minute panic about what to cook!
It’s all about having everything ready to go, so you’re not left stressing over what to eat.
Plus, it’s a great way to stay on top of your family’s needs – whether that’s accommodating picky eaters or cooking allergy-friendly meals.
✔️ Step 1: Take Stock of What You’ve Got
Before you start, take a look around your kitchen. Check the fridge, freezer, and cupboards to see what you already have.
Are there any leftovers you need to use up or items that are close to expiring?
This is a great way to avoid buying unnecessary ingredients and make sure food doesn’t go to waste. It’s like doing a mini inventory of what’s in the house – and trust me, it will save you money and time.
✔️ Step 2: Choose Your Meals for the Week
Now the fun part – picking your meals for the week! Think about what your family loves to eat & what ingredients you already have at home that need to be used.
Mix easy weeknight meals with something a bit more special for the weekend. I like to include a bit of variety – some meat dishes, some veggie ones, and a couple of quick pasta or stir-fry meals. I also let the kids choose a meal each.
You don’t need to overcomplicate things; you can always go back to old favourites. If you need some inspiration, take a look at my recipe index for ideas.
Don’t forget to factor in any dietary requirements or busy nights where you may need to prepare something in advance.
✔️ Step 3: Make Your Shopping List & Shop
Once you’ve picked your meals, it’s time to make your shopping list. Go through each meal and jot down everything you’ll need to make them.
I like to group my list into sections – like fresh, frozen food, and store cupboard essentials – to make my shopping trip quicker and easier.
Then either book your online food shop slot or visit the supermarket to get your shopping.
✔️ Step 4: Stick to the Plan (But Be Flexible!)
Now, I’m not going to tell you that meal planning always goes smoothly – life happens! Maybe you’ll end up skipping a meal or something unexpected will come up. That’s totally fine! The beauty of meal planning is that it’s flexible. You can switch meals around, use leftovers, or even turn extra ingredients into a new dish. So, don’t stress if things don’t go exactly as planned – meal planning is all about making things easier, not harder.
⭐ Bonus Meal Planning Tips
- Use a Meal Planner: If you’re new to meal planning, try a printable meal planner like mine below or an app to keep things organised.
- Involve the Family: Get the kids involved in picking meals or helping with prep. I like to let my kids choose one meal per week each, which they love!
- Keep It Simple: Start small and keep things simple. You don’t need to plan every meal at first – just focus on the basics and build up from there. I never plan breakfasts, but include lunches and dinners on my planner as this is what suits our family.
💬 FAQs
It’s totally up to you, but many people find that planning on a Sunday works well. It gives you time to organise your week ahead and get your shopping done before the busy days kick in. If Sundays don’t work, try another day that fits your schedule.
Personally, I do my meal plan on a Sunday evening in front of the TV and book my Tesco slot for the Monday so all the food is here, ready for dinner on Monday night.
Life happens, and that’s totally fine! Meal planning gives you the flexibility to swap meals around, use leftovers, or even make the meal to freeze it for a later date. The key is to have a plan, but be adaptable.
Get them involved in the process! Let them help choose meals or even do some of the prep work. It can make the whole thing more fun for them, and they might be more excited to eat what they've had a hand in planning.
By planning ahead and taking stock of what you already have, you’ll use up ingredients before they expire. You can also use leftovers creatively or make extra portions to freeze for later.
